Variety Positioning

• A new BYDV resistant wheat on the Recommended List with provisional group 2 milling quality.  

• Likely to have appeal with farmers interested in growing Insecticide free wheat as an option under the sustainable farming Initiative (SFI).  

• While it has relatively low yields (89% treated, 84% untreated) in official trials, it has good grain quality with high protein (13.1%, HFN (279s) and specific weight (78.2 kg/hl).

• Unsuitable for export under ukp.

• Best drilled from mid-September through to the end of October.

• RGT Goldfinch performs across soil types with particularly good performance on lighter soils.

• Susceptible to stem base diseases so it should be grown as a first wheat.  

• Moderate height (88 cm) but relatively weak (7) (4) treated, (3) (3) so a robust pgr programme is essential.  Relatively late maturity (+3).

• Good all round disease ratings against mildew (7) (7), yellow rust (9) (9), brown rust (9) (9) and Septoria tritici (7) (7).  

• Weak against eyespot (4.6) but reasonable ear blight resistance (6).

• Resistant to orange wheat blossom midge.
